US Gun Violence: Three Officers Injured in Rochester Shooting; Suspect Killed

Rochester: Authorities report a suspect was fatally shot by police after he opened fire on three police officers and another individual in Rochester, New York.

According to Nam News Network, the shooting occurred as police responded to a domestic incident late Friday, December 19. The officers and the additional victim sustained injuries during the encounter.

Two officers from the Rochester Police Department responded to a report of a domestic dispute around 10:15 p.m., where they were fired upon upon arrival, stated Rochester Police Chief David Smith during a morning news conference on Saturday, December 20.

The initial report came from a caller who indicated his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend was attempting to break into her house and might be armed. The caller, who possessed a legal firearm, reported this to the police, Smith elaborated.

Upon arrival, the officers were met with gunfire at close range from the suspect, who immediately fired multiple shots at both the officers and the caller, striking two of
the officers, Smith explained.

A subsequent exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspect and the caller, resulting in the caller being shot multiple times, Smith noted.

The suspect attempted to flee but was located shortly after by another officer. When ordered to stop, the suspect again brandished a handgun and shot the officer. This prompted the officer and others to return fire, fatally striking the suspect, Smith stated.

The three injured officers from the Rochester Police Department remain hospitalized. The first officer, who was shot multiple times, was protected by a ballistic vest; his injuries are not life-threatening, and he is in stable condition, Smith reported. The second officer, who sustained an upper body wound, underwent surgery and is in critical but stable condition. The third officer, also shot in the upper body, is in stable condition despite serious injuries.

The caller, who was shot multiple times, is in serious but non-life-threatening condition, Smith confirmed.

Public official
s expressed gratitude and concern for the officers. Rochester Mayor Malik Evans commended their heroism and thanked first responders for securing the scene and saving lives. Governor Kathy Hochul echoed these sentiments on X, offering prayers for the officers’ recovery and the support of state police.
