Buttler and Archer Retained as Livingstone Released Ahead of IPL 2026

Mumbai: Englands Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, and Phil Salt have been retained by their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises for the 2026 season, but all-rounder Liam Livingstone has been released.

According to BBC, Buttler, who averaged 59.77 last year, will continue with Gujarat Titans. On the other hand, Phil Salt remains with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after a stellar performance with a strike-rate of 175.98, contributing significantly to their first title win.

Archer, despite only taking 11 wickets at an average of 39.18 last season, has shown a promising run of fitness, leading to his retention by Rajasthan Royals. However, Liam Livingstone has been let go by Bengaluru following a lackluster campaign in which he managed only 112 runs in 10 innings and took two wickets with an economy rate of 8.44.

Other English players retained include Jamie Overton with Chennai Super Kings, Will Jacks with Mumbai Indians, Jacob Bethell with Bengaluru, and Brydon Carse with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Reece Topley and Moeen Ali have been released by Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively.

In a significant trade move, all-rounder Sam Curran has shifted from Chennai Super Kings to Rajasthan Royals, joining India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in exchange for India batter Sanju Samson. Notably absent from the retained list is England batter Harry Brook, who opted out of the tournament for the second consecutive year, risking a potential two-year suspension.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell’s release from Kolkata Knight Riders marks the end of an eleven-season stint, while Australia’s Glenn Maxwell and Josh Inglis have been let go by Punjab Kings. Adam Zampa and Jake Fraser-McGurk have been released by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals, respectively. New Zealand players Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra have also been released from Chennai Super Kings.

The player auction to fill the remaining 77 slots, including 31 for overseas players, is scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi. However, the dates for the 2026 IPL tournament have yet to be announced.
