Dakar: Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of Senegal presides over the opening ceremony of the first edition of the West African Festival of Arts and Culture (ECOFEST 2025) in Dakar. The city, hosting the event, welcomed the official launch on Sunday, 30 November 2025. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Prime Minister and jointly organized by the ECOWAS and UEMOA Commissions, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal. This initiative brings to life a project conceived nearly thirty-eight years ago, aimed at strengthening regional integration through arts and culture.

According to African Press Organization, the Mayor of Dakar, Abass Fall, emphasized Senegal’s hospitality and highlighted Dakar’s identity as a cosmopolitan and vibrant city. He noted ECOFEST’s role as a bridge between West African peoples and a platform for promoting regional cultural talents.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko stated that the Festival aims to promote integration, social cohesion, peace, and development through culture. This aligns with Senegal’s government’s commitment to making culture a pillar of economic and social development.

Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, speaking for Dr. Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, praised the leadership of Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, for his dedication to culture and regional integration. She also acknowledged the President of the UEMOA Commission, Abdoulaye Diop, for his role in realizing ECOFEST and honored artists and leaders who are cultural icons in West Africa.

The Festival is anchored in ECOWAS Vision 2050, which focuses on peace and prosperity for all. The theme, ‘Political Mutations and Crises in West Africa: What Can Culture Do?’ encourages reflection on the role of arts in fostering social bonds and resilience. ECOWAS emphasized that culture has been central to resistance and renewal throughout West African history.

The ceremony featured performances by artists such as Sidiki Diabat©, Isma«l L´, Solange Cesarovna, and Gyakie. Their performances, blending traditional music and dance, created a moment of artistic communion among the attendees.

ECOFEST 2025 will continue until 6 December, offering a program that includes exhibitions, concerts, performances, and cultural exchanges. This first edition aims to highlight the diverse artistic expressions within West Africa, united by shared cultural heritage.
