Pujara Reflects on Unique Experience Playing with Jasprit Bumrah

Mumbai: In a recent column, Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara shared his unique experiences of playing alongside fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, offering insights into Bumrah’s distinct approach and presence on the field. Pujara first encountered Bumrah in a club match when the latter was still a teenager, long before they became teammates on the Indian national team.

According to BBC, Pujara described Bumrah as different from other bowlers, even during his early years, primarily due to his exceptional pace. Recollecting a match where he stood at first slip with Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan beside him, Pujara noted that Bumrah’s bowling felt unlike any other they had faced, including seasoned bowlers like Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Hardik Pandya.

Pujara highlighted the unique challenges Bumrah’s bowling posed to slip fielders, owing to the angles created by his action and his position wide on the crease. This necessitated adjustments in the positioning of the wicketkeeper and slip fielders. Despite these challenges, Pujara emphasized Bumrah’s amiable nature, noting his tendency not to chide teammates for dropped catches.

Off the field, Pujara described Bumrah as an introvert who preferred spending time alone. Despite his reserved nature, Bumrah occasionally joined Pujara, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Wriddhiman Saha for PlayStation sessions, albeit reluctantly. Pujara humorously recounted how they would jokingly threaten not to take catches off Bumrah’s bowling if he didn’t join their gaming sessions.

Pujara also reflected on Bumrah’s evolution as a bowler, particularly highlighting his breakout performances during India’s 2018 tour of England. He recounted a memorable delivery Bumrah bowled to Keaton Jennings, which showcased his mastery of swing and seam movement. Pujara praised Bumrah’s ability to maintain composure and focus on the next delivery, regardless of success.

In the dressing room, Pujara noted Bumrah’s keen observation of the game, providing valuable input on strategies for both Indian and opposition players. His cricketing acumen, developed through experiences in the IPL and interactions with renowned players like Lasith Malinga, has contributed to his reputation as a potential captaincy candidate.

Pujara concluded by emphasizing Bumrah’s competitive spirit and determination, whether batting or bowling. He recounted a personal milestone during the 2018 England tour when Bumrah’s support helped him reach a century, showcasing Bumrah’s commitment to the team’s success.
