Niamey: An Indian national was killed and another abducted in what India’s embassy described as a terrorist attack in the southwestern Dosso region of Niger. A third individual is currently listed as missing, according to a statement released by the embassy.
According to Nam News Network, local sources reported that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit that was providing security at a construction site for an electrical line. The attack occurred in the Dosso region, approximately 100 kilometers from the capital city, Niamey. In response to the incident, India’s embassy in Niamey has urged Indian nationals in Niger to remain vigilant. The embassy is coordinating with the employer, victims’ families, and the Nigerian government to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased individual’s remains.
The Dosso region shares borders with both Nigeria and Benin, areas where attacks frequently target civilians, the military, and infrastructure such as the oil pipeline transporting crude from Niger to Benin. Authorities generally attribute these attacks to terrorist groups or bandits. The region is in proximity to Tillaberi, near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, an area known to be a stronghold for jihadist groups.
In a related development, official Indian sources have confirmed that five Indian technicians were kidnapped in an April 25 attack just north of the nearby town of Sakoira, resulting in the deaths of twelve Nigerien soldiers. Additionally, earlier this month, three Indian nationals working in Mali were kidnapped from a cement factory in the western part of the country.
